Today, we took a big step forward! We moved past designing single badges and transitioned into the role of System Architects. The central goal was to ensure your badges connect meaningfully, creating a clear, motivating path of progression for the learner, and establishing the policies necessary to maintain user trust.

System Flow and Inspiration

We kicked off the session by challenging the idea that a badge system is automatically gamification. We then looked to game design for inspiration, using insights from Ingrida Lescauskiene, PhD , and exploring Yu-Kai Chou's 8 core human behavior motivators. This led us to look at different system structures: Linear, Competence-based, and Skill Treemodels.

To check out questions and answers when working with Open Badges and Badge Systems, this F.A.Q. about Open Badges Padlet, it will stay available after the training course.

You've all done great work developing your own badge systems, focusing on creating a flow that genuinely makes sense for your specific users and organisation. To finalise the design, we discussed incorporating endorsements and specific competence models into your systems.

Endorsement is an act of giving public approval and support for an Open Badge, an Activity or an Organiser. It shows trust, gives visibility and creates new opportunities. Organisers can use the Cities of Learning platform to send an invitation to other organisations, institutions and experts to express their endorsement on a badge level.

Competencemodels can be added on the Cities of Learning Platform. Several competence models are already available.

Digcomp Competence Framework: Recognise Digital competences
LifeComp: Promote personal, social and learning to learn key competences
GreenComp; Valuing sustainability competence
ETS Competence model for trainers
ETS Competence model for youth workers

Next Up: The Future

Tomorrow, Day 5: Future Badging, is our closing day, focused entirely on the future. We will formalise your final policies, discuss implementation challenges, and plan the next steps for launching your quality badge systems in the real world.

Informații despre insignăValidări
This badge is awarded for successfully moving from designing individual badges to building a functional badge ecosystem. The earner has demonstrated the ability to map out a clear learner progression path.

To earn this badge, the participant must have:
  1. Apply core system design principles (such as Linear, Competence-based, or Skill Tree models) to devise a logical learning flow.
  2. Use insights from gamification (e.g., Yu-Kai Chou’s 8 motivators) to inform the system's design.
  3. Understand the role of endorsements and necessary policies (e.g., issuance, revocation, appeal) in maintaining the system's credibility.
  4. Identify and integrate relevant competence frameworks (such as DigComp, LifeComp, or GreenComp) into the system structure.
  5. Successfully completed the individual reflection of day 4.
  6. Attended the full Day 4 programme.

The course trainers Sandra Zoomers and Laimonas Ragauskas, both certified to deliver Quality Open Badge training by the Cities of Learning Network, confirm the attendance, active participation and reflection of day 4 of the training ‘Recognition of Non-formal Learning with Quality Open Badges’. The training course is supported by the EU programme Erasmus+ and organised by the Network of Cities of Learning.

Tasks
Task no.1
Evidence verified by: auto-aprobare
To deepen your learning, think and report on the following:

  1. Feelings. How do I feel about the day?
  2. Findings: What do I take from the day?
  3. Feedback: What feedback would I like to give to other peer learners and organisers?
