Take your first steps into the Ukrainian language with a practical and engaging course designed for complete beginners. Basic Ukrainian (CEFR A1.1) provides a solid foundation in everyday communication while introducing you to the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine.
From the very beginning, you will learn the Ukrainian alphabet, pronunciation, essential vocabulary, and fundamental grammar needed to communicate in real-life situations. Through interactive activities and practical exercises, you will develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The course focuses on authentic communication, enabling you to introduce yourself, talk about your studies and daily life, ask and answer simple questions, understand basic information, and interact naturally in common social situations. Whether you are preparing for academic mobility, planning to travel, or simply interested in learning a new language, this course equips you with the essential skills to communicate effectively.
Alongside language learning, you will explore Ukrainian traditions, customs, and everyday life, gaining valuable intercultural awareness and a deeper understanding of Ukrainian society.
Training Course Content:
1. Introduction to the Ukrainian Language. Cyrillic Alphabet, Sounds and Stress. Greetings and basic phrases. (2 hours).
2. Introducing Yourself. Personal information. Countries and nationalities. Professions and studies. Verb “to be” (є), personal pronouns. Simple sentence structure (4 hours).
3. Daily Life. Numbers, time, days of the week. Daily activities. Present tense of common verbs. Asking and answering simple questions (4 hours).
4. People and Places. Family and friends. Describing people. Places in the city and university. Prepositions of place. (6 hours).
5. Food and Shopping. Food vocabulary. Ordering food. Prices and money. Basic dialogues in shops and cafés. (4 hours).
6. Everyday Communication and Language Practice. Asking for directions. Making simple plans. Revision of A1.1 vocabulary and grammar. (4 hours).

Learning Outcomes:
After completing the course students will be able to:
- Recognize and read the Ukrainian alphabet and understand basic pronunciation rules.
- Use basic everyday expressions and simple phrases for communication in familiar situations (CEFR A1.1 level).
- Introduce themselves and provide basic personal information (name, country, studies, profession).
- Ask and answer simple questions about daily life, time, numbers, and routines.
- Understand simple spoken and written Ukrainian related to familiar topics.
- Demonstrate basic intercultural awareness related to Ukrainian communication norm.
Methods Applied During Learning:
Lectures and seminars based on problem-based and interactive teaching methods, group discussions, simulation exercises, role-playing, and presentation methods.
Type of Assessment and Evaluation Method:
- Task completion during seminars – 50 % of the assessment.
- Final assessment – 50 % of the evaluation
Certification:
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a digital micro-credential in the form of an Open Digital Badge, as well as a certificate containing all the necessary information. The badge is issued via email after task submission and evaluation on the MRU Moodle platform.

Learning outcomes:
This micro-credential confirms that the owner of it is able to:
- Recognize and read the Ukrainian alphabet and understand basic pronunciation rules.

- Introduce themselves and provide basic personal information (name, country, studies, profession).
- Ask and answer simple questions about daily life, time, numbers, and routines.
- Understand simple spoken and written Ukrainian related to familiar topics.
